Prior to 2005, various timetables were being used to determine prayer times in the Czech Republic. Each city and each organization had its own schedule calculated based on different methods. In 2004, representatives of all Islamic organizations in the Czech Republic met in Prague, where they agreed to unify the methodology for calculating prayer times for the whole country. Since 2005 till present day, all muslims in the Czech Republic pray according to these unified times.
However during the years 2013 and 2014, several meetings between the leaders of Islamic organizations in the Czech Republic took place. What prompted this was the criticism regarding the dual methodology for calculating the prayer times in the country. The methodologies involved were those of the ISNA organization from North America and the Mekkan Um Alquara method, which was being used during summer to calculate the night (isha) prayer.
One of the main criteria in choosing a methodology was the geographical location of the Czech Republic. Given its relatively high latitude, the days can be quite long in the summer months, resulting in the morning prayer being too early and the night prayer too late.
After much discussion the methodology of the Union of Islamic Organizations in France, which uses an angle of 12°, was chosen due to two reasons:
The northern part of France, including its capital Paris, lies at the same latitude as the Czech Republic.
The method used was approved by a large number of muslim scholars during a conference held in France in 1994. This conference was organized by the Union of Muslim Organizations in France and was attended by many prominent Islamic organizations as well as personalities.
The prayer times are calculated based on mathematical equations by Dr. Monzur Ahmed of Birmingham, UK. His equations are used in most applications and online services to calculate prayer times.
The organizations involved in selecting the methodology and calculating the prayer times are as follows:
Centre of Muslim Communities in the Czech Republic
The Muslim Community in Prague
Islamic Foundation in Prague
Muslim Community in Brno
Islamic Foundation in Brno
Muslim Community in Karlovy Vary
Muslim Community in Hradec Kralove
